We are always going to get a good game against Fulbourn and we have had some close battles over the past two seasons.
Fulbourn arrived at The Grange and were only able to field 9 players. Whilst wanting to be fair to them we were unwilling to drop down to a 9 a side match as this is County standard football and we are in a competitive league.
Full credit to Fulbourn to be fair though throughout the game. They worked hard all over the pitch and it became evident in the first half that this was never going to be an easy victory.
Our first goal came in the 14th minute, with a delightful through ball from Megan P finding Yaz who ran onto it and placed the ball into the corner of the goal. The lead was doubled 3 minutes later when a lob over a defender from Stacey F found Sasha who in turn lobbed the keeper, 2-0. This lead now allowed us to use the extra players and change formation to 3-5-2.
Lots of attacking and chances were coming our way but in keeping with our season many of them were to go to waste. On 33 minutes we were to see the goal of the match. Megan P passed the ball to Jenna who was just outside the box, controlling the ball she curled her right foot around the ball and it flew into the top of net; nothing the excellent Fulbourn keeper could do to stop that one.
Half Time 3-0
A good first half but the team talk was about concentration on the passing game and building the attack.
Fulbourn must have been listening because 5 minutes into the second half and they pulled a goal back in one of few forays into our penalty area. We were really caught on the hop and unable to clear the ball, Fulbourn took full advantage.
We continued to attack regularly and now went to a 3-4-3 formation. On 63 minutes Yaz set up Megan S who rolled the ball past the keeper for our fourth goal.
Another goal was conceded though on 76 minutes, when we were unable to clear a good corner, the ball dropping at the feet of a Fulbourn striker who made no mistake in scoring.
6 minutes later was to be the last of the scoring. Georgina found Yaz on the edge of the box and she side footed the ball expertly into the top corner giving the keeper no chance.
Full Time 5-2
On paper, it probably looked like we should have won this game by a bigger margin. The fantastic work rate and effort by Fulbourn meant this did not happen and although we did have the bulk of the possession and fashioned plenty of chances on goal, the scoreline was probably a fair reflection of the game.
We wish Fulbourn well for the remainder of the season and hope they can get more players available for their remaining fixtures.
