A game of two halves (and a mad 4 minutes)
With a decent run of form recently, we were in good spirits for our first match of the season against Newmarket Town, another mainly young, fit and hungry outfit.
No Sasha today due to injury meant that Alice was being used as a makeshift striker, not her favourite position but she was taking one for the team.
We had a good start to the game and quickly established our superiority on the game, playing a good passing possession game. We dealt well with anything Newmarket tried going forward and Megan P was having a field day in the centre of the field, running the game. It wasn't until the 38th minute that we finally made our superiority pay when a long ball from the back by Rachel found Yas who nodded the ball on and then deftly lobbed the keeper, an excellent finish and well deserved.
On 39 minutes, Savannah was to make her Ladies debut, replacing Megan S who had spent most of the past week in Ireland beer tasting!
Half Time 1-0
Management were delighted with the first half and more goals wouldn't have flattered us. We needed to keep the momentum going though.
On 51 minutes, the Newmarket defence looked to clear away one of our attacks and it fell to Shannon on the edge of the box, she lobbed the keeper superbly to give us a 2 goal advantage.
Just 3 minutes later a Newmarket attack saw one of their players 1 on 1 with Katie in a foot race for the ball, their player got to the ball first and was able to round Katie and calmly slot the ball away to reduce the deficit to 1.
Their comeback was complete 4 minutes later when we were yet again not good enough to clear danger from our penalty area and the opposition found the net; we have conceded far too many of thse sloppy goals this season.
On 68 minutes we reverted to our starting 11 and although we started to create more chances, none of them resulting in a winner for us. To be fair to Newmarket, they worked hard to get back into the game and deserved something out of the game based on their second half performance.
Full Time 2-2
A disappointing point really as we should really have been out of sight with our display in the first half, but couldn't find the finish to generally excellent approach play. Two points lost rather than 1 gained.
No game next week and then we are back in action against Cambridge United Women Reserves at The Grange on Sunday 3rd April.
