Team Update - 19 Oct 2015

After a very eventful day yesterday, time to take stock and update on where we are.

A superb 5-0 victory yesterday against a game Corby Town Ladies team was tarnished prior to kick off with the devastating news about Dita & Klinta being involved in an accident en-route to the match. Now the dust has settled it looks like the good news is that neither of them have suffered any broken bones but the aftermath of such a horrific accident meant that the aches and pains were beginning to appear last night. Unfortunately, a friend who was with them in the car has suffered a broken leg and we wish her well and a speedy recovery. We of course wish Dita & Klinta a speedy recovery too and hope it won't be too long before we see them on the pitch again.

Back to yesterday's match. As said in the report, it was a fine performance by all 12 players against a gritty Corby team. All good teams are built on a solid defence and a solid spine through the team; we have both of these this season. We are also so lucky to have such an impressive captain and leader in Tash.

Our fitness is becoming a decisive factor in games as well, our work in pre-season is paying off and our use of the wings is really paying dividends.

I also need to mention for three of our more recent signings. Stacie, Yaz and Amy have already made huge contributions to the team and for those that are returning after long breaks away from the game, the sharpness is returning quickly, and for Yaz, the goals are returning as well!

Whilst on paper it looked gloomy that 3 more players were injured this weekend with Kerry injuring her knee during the match, we will however welcome back some other players for our League Cup tie against Cambridge City Ladies this coming Sunday. This is why we have worked so hard to build a strong squad, not just a strong first 11 and it is paying dividends already.

Another area that we should be proud of as a club is the bringing through of youth to the Ladies squad. Katie has made the Goalkeepers position her own with excellent performance week in, week out for both the U18s and the Ladies. After several substitute appearances, Georgina also made her full debut yesterday and produced a strong performance.

This is what a good club does; it grows it's youth section in a safe and fun environment with excellent coaching and positive reinforcement whilst growing at a sustainable and affordable pace. Netherton United Ladies & Girls haven't become the biggest and most successful female club in the city overnight, it has taken years of work and that work continues.

Back to the ladies and this development will hopefully see a good number of our current U18s stepping up to Ladies football next season as they are all developing at a great rate and there is every chance we will be able to field two Ladies teams next season.

Training is on as usual tomorrow night, see you there.
