Team Update - 19 Dec 2015
December 19, 2015 - 11:56 AM
As we head into our last game of 2015, it seems a good time to reflect on where we are and look forward to where we are going in 2016.
So far, 2015/16 has been an up and down season, both on and off the pitch. We saw some of our squad head off to University which is fantastic, although we obviously miss them.
We have taken lots of new players into the squad both from last years U16 squad and also externally from the club. This has without a doubt improved the quality and strength in depth of the squad but has not necessarily translated into positive results on the pitch in recent weeks.
We had an excellent pre-season and start to the season but we have admittedly been on a poor run of late, although we had an brilliant nerve-jangling extra time and penalties cup win over Thrapston in the middle of the losses. This took us into the County Cup 1/4 finals where we have a chance to avenge our narrow FA Cup defeat to Moulton.
Throughout this period though, we have played good football, been tight at the back but really had no luck in the final third in converting shots into goals. Steve and Andy both firmly believe that not only will be rediscover our form soon, but one of our opponents will be on the wrong end of a big score soon!
So we know that there is work to do, but there is plenty of the season left for us to turn our form around and start challenging at the top of the table, we are good enough!
This Sunday sees the arrival of another new signing, striker Annie Posnett, yet another quality player to add to the squad. We have also recently had two other players start training with us with a view to signing, welcome to Keeley Tansley and Taylor Reade, again, both talented players who will fit into the squad well.
There are also further signings in the pipeline, showing that we are really attracting quality footballers to our club from around the city and beyond.
With a number of our U18s being available for Ladies football next season it seems very likely that we will be fielding two sides next season, we will be making decisions as we approach the 2016/17 season.
Not only new signings, but we have also welcomed back some of our key players from longer term injuries in recent weeks. Great to see players coming back from injury, still hungry for the game and to force themselves straight back into the match day squads. We still have a couple of long term injuries but wish them well in their recovery.
Steve and Andy remain positive that we are building a squad to really challenge for honours and promotion at Netherton over this and coming seasons. The squad is packed with quality players now, both experienced and emerging players, the future really is bright.
FInally, we want to wish all our players, their families and our many supporters a very happy Christmas and a brilliant 2016. But before that, 3 points at Fulbourn tomorrow please!!
