Our first match in the Northants County Cup took us to the Corby FC stadium, a fitting venue for what looked on paper to be a good match in the offing.
With a squad of 14, disaster was to strike us before kick off with the news that a nasty Road Traffic Accident involving Dita and Klinta had taken place en-route to the match. Obviously everyone's concern was for their safety and there were a lot of worried faces in the dressing room when the news broke. The latest update is that Klinta has broken her nose and Dita has a broken hand, get well soon ladies, we are all thinking of you.
This meant that we would only have the one sub and prior to kick off we were told by the referee that it was not roll on, roll off as we expected, giving us a real headache with only one substitution allowed for the whole match.
Nonetheless, spirits were high in the team following the previous excellent victory. Instructions were simple, play the ball on the ground, use our excellent passing game and get off to a quick start.
We were on it from the first whistle. Pressing and probing, it was only 3 minutes into the game when Alice crossed and Yaz was able to steer the ball into the net for an early but deserved lead.
We enjoyed long periods of possession and looked comfortable on the ball and when Corby ventured forward our back line ably supported by the midfield dealt with everything with ease. in fact, we can't remember a shot on goal from inside our box the whole game.
On 36 minutes we increased our lead, and it had been coming. Megan with more great work down the right wing, crossed and as Yaz went to play the ball was shoved from behind. With the bench shouting for the penalty, the referee sensibly played on as the ball found Kerry, who confidently stroked the ball past the ex-Netherton player Zoe Watkins.
We continued to press and just prior to the half-time whistle, Megan created more havoc down the wing and dinked the ball over the keeper only to see the ball hit the bar and go clear.
Half Time 0-2
A delighted management team had very little to say, the ladies had done all the talking on the pitch. A request for another early goal was made, which we felt would kill off the match.
The ladies obliged! Within a minute of kick off, Alice played the ball through and Kerry was left in a foot race with the keeper and after a tussle the ball sat nicely at Kerry's feet where she was able to stroke the ball into the net from the edge of the box. 3-0 and cruising.
It wasn't to end well for Kerry though 5 minutes later as she crumpled into a heap on the pitch and had to be stretchered off the pitch with what looked like a re-occurence of her knee problem. Nat replaced Kerry, Nat moved alongside Shannon in centre mid, Georgina moved out to left wing and Alice moved up front alongside Yaz.
We continued to pass the ball around well, breaking down both flanks but still soaked up anything Corby has to throw at us.
Our fourth goal was to arrive on 78 minutes. A beautiful raking ball from Tash found Megan out wide right and she chased into the area before calmly finding the bottom corner, probably the goal of the day.
In extensive injury time due to Kerry's injury and a couple of stoppages for Corby players, we made it 5-0 when Yaz put Alice through and after several previous attempts on goal, she got this one right sliding the ball into the net to complete a comprehensive victory.
A good game played in good spirit and I am told enjoyed by those watching.
This team is continuing to grow and some of our passing play today was excellent. It is also 2 clean sheets in a row and no wonder, we look so confident and secure at the back with Katie and the defence, whoever plays.
Player of the match went to Megan for her work rate, assist and goal but truthfully no one at all let us down today and many players could have been named player of the match.
