For our last match of 2015, we made the trip around the A14 to Fulbourn, a team we had mixed fortune against last season. They have struggled this season with only the one point on the board so far but we know in this league positions don't matter and most teams can win on their day. Plus, we were only 3 points ahead of them.
It was a strong looking squad on paper, as was the starting 11. We welcomed back Megan P from University and also new signing Annie Posnett, who started on the bench.
We started the match on the front foot and it only took us 5 minutes to score, with Alice playing a good ball through to Yaz on the edge of the box, she jinked her way past two defenders and placed the ball to the keepers right into the net, great goal great start.
Just 4 minutes later Fulbourn were level and it was to come from a set piece that we didn't deal with. The free kick went into the area, Katie couldn't gather it and in the scramble that followed a Fulbourn foot got the decisive touch to level the scores. A real set back after a great start but we have been conceding too many sloppy goals this season and this was another one.
Only a minute later we were back in front! Same combination of Alice (a throw in this time) to Yaz, beat defenders and clinically finished, 2-1 Netherton. Yaz has found her scoring touch again, two great finishes.
In the 25th minute, we decided to give Annie an early debut and she came on for Alice who had a knock below her knee.
On 37 minutes we were forced to make a substitution, with Rachel struggling with a knee injury being replaced by Amy.
We continued to make chances but were unable to convert and a sucker punch on the 45th minute saw Fulbourn equalise, again we didn't clear our lines quickly enough and they found the net.
Half Time 2-2
One substitution at half time with Alice returning to the action in place of Lucy who had been struggling with illness all week but up to half time had been magnificent.
With the wind at our back, we soon imposed ourselves on the game and started to create chances, mainly from knock through's from Nat to either Annie or Yaz. The best chance of this period saw Annie clip the post but she was making chances with her pace and 3 or 4 one on ones we dealt with by the excellent opposition keeper.
On 78 minutes we decided to change to 3-4-3, releasing Alice from the back to move into midfield with Megan joining Yaz and Annie up front.
This paid off almost immediately, with good work from Stacey out wide right, crossing the ball to Alice, who turned on the edge of the box and curled a beauty into the top corner, the keeper had no chance.
On 81 minutes Shannon came on in midfield to replace Megan and we reverted to 4-4-2.
We continued to press with the occasional attack from Fulbourn but the goal of the game was to come in the dying minutes. We passed our way out of the back to find Shannon, who fed the ball out wide to Yaz, she played a beautiful pass into the six yard box and Annie whipped in to steer the ball past the Fulbourn keeper.
Full Time 4-2
A good performance and more importantly we got the 3 points we came for and ended the year with a win.
A fine debut from Annie who possesses great pace and will also score a lot of goals for us. Yaz back in the goals, the defence was generally secure and lots of chances made.
But player of the match went to Alice, who was awesome all over the pitch today, with two assists and a superb finish.
We wish all our players, their families and all our supporters a very happy Christmas and a great 2016.
We aim to come back from the break reinvigorated and make a charge up the league table and we can't wait to get the chance to avenge our FA Cup defeat to Moulton when they visit for the Northants County Cup 1/4 match.
