It was a trip to the open fields of Jubilee Park, Huntingdon for our match this week, to take on Huntingdon Town who had not played a lot of football so far this season.
There were going to be two features that would make this a difficult game for both teams; a really stiff wind blowing across the pitch and a very bobbly surface.
Once again, we had asked the ladies to play to our strengths, pass the ball around on the floor and use the wings. Almost immediately from kick off, we started to impose ourselves on the game and like last weeks friendly, we dominated large chunks of possession without creating too many good goal scoring chances. We had a few efforts but it wasn't until. the 43rd minute that a through ball from Megan P found Yaz, with work to do she had to hold off defenders before placing the ball past the keeper into the bottom corner of the net. This was the kind of chance we had been missing all season so this gave the team a huge boost as we went into half time.
Half Time 1-0
The cross wind was slightly with us in the second half but any high balls were at the mercy of the wind. We were straight back onto the front foot and Sacha and Yaz were beginning to gel upfront. This was to lead to our second goal, with good work from Sacha out wide, she forced the ball into the waiting Yaz, a good turn, shot and all the keeper could do was help it into the corner of the net; 2-0 and well deserved.
We continued to dominate large portions of the match with Huntingdon rarely getting near our goal, Katie had little to do all match and the defence held strong.
We changed to a 3-4-3 formation with 15 minutes to go to try and force more chances and on 86 minutes a long ball from defence was helped on into the box by Yaz and Sacha was there to confidently strike the ball past the keeper for her first Netherton goal.
Full Time 3-0
A dominant display today in difficult conditions not helped by losing a couple of playing early in the day to illness. The 13 available worked hard for the cause though and on a better pitch with less wind we probably would have won by a much bigger scoreline. Credit to Huntingdon who keep going with just the 11 players throughout the game.
