- Sunny spells
A glorious mainly sunny day greeted the players as they arrived for this clash with the current league leaders.
A decent run of form, 4 games unbeaten, meant that we approached the game with confidence as we also felt we were worth more that the 1-0 defeat away to them a couple of months ago.
With only two midfield substitutes, it would be a tough game with very little options to change formations.
We did start well and were playing with the intensity that was asked for from the management prior to kick off. On 17 minutes we were to get a well deserved opening goal. Yas was able to get the ball to Sasha just inside the opposition penalty area but she still had work to do. After a couple of jinking turns she was clear on goal and calmly slotted the ball to the keepers left into the bottom corner.
We dominated large chunks of this game and the opposition hardly fashioned a chance from within 20 yards in the first half.
Injury to Yaz forced us into a change in formation, 4-5-1, with Sasha working alone upfront.
Half Time 1-0
The second half started pretty much as the previous one had ended with Netherton controlling much of the game with regular forays into the Cambridge half.
Our achilles heel this season has been conceding sloppy goals and yet another one was to cost us in the 59th minute. Ball in the box, no one able to clear and time on the ball allowed the opposition to score.
On 67 minutes we went back to 4-4-2 and carried on creating chances. In an effort to get a winner, Cambridge went to 3 up front but this didn't really create much more attacking play for them.
Final Score 1-1
For a neutral, I believe it would have been hard to identify which team was top of the league and which was mid table. The ladies worked so hard today and really did deserve more out of the game but it wasn't to be.
Player of the match was Megan P who dominated much of the central midfield play but everyone played their part in a great performance.
